While going through the Old Testament, one thing really stood out to me: they took the Sabbath seriously.

It really made me wonder why — God doesn’t do anything without intentionality or purpose. So, what is the purpose of Sabbath? Of rest? Why was that a part of our design?

And why do we fight it so much?

Why is it so hard for us to rest? Because, funnily enough, it is. So hard that God needed to place laws down for the Jews to follow or they wouldn’t have rested. (Still true today, for everyone, I’d guess.)

Nothing else in nature functions at 100% capacity, 100% of the time … but we think we humans can do it or that we are meant to. And yet, we know, intellectually anyway, that soil that is worked without rest won’t yield good fruit. Or any fruit.

God blessed the day He rested and made it holy.

Maybe we should think about planning our lives around the Sabbath, instead of the other way around.

Rather than “squeezing in” time to rest in the Lord, we make a point of making sure we squeeze EVERYTHING ELSE in around that time instead.
